Poster designs

During the last Monday evening meeting it was discussed that they would like a collection of different posters and handouts that they can have and display at different fares. Only myself and Andy have come up with poster and leaflet ideas so far and they differ greatly in their content.
The guys at Bath uni have looked over the statements that I made in the previous handout design, my little book of big facts, and we have worked together to come up with 10 interesting facts that should get people interested in the centre for sustainable technologies and wanting to know more. They are:

  • Helium should cost seventy-five pounds per balloon
  • Smartphones contain on average around fourty elements, some of which are very rare
  • Without chemicals there would be nothing. Literally
  • Demand for oil could outstretch supply in less than ten years
  • More energy from sunlight strikes the earth in one hour than all of the energy consumed by humans in one year
  • On average, cars produce ten kilograms of carbon dioxide per one gallon of fuel
  • sending one large email produces fifty grams of carbon dioxide
  • a ceramic mug must be used over one thousand times to be more energy efficient than a polystyrene cup
  • Uk consumers own around thirty billion pounds worth of clothes which they have not worn for a year
  • Eight billion single use carrier bags were used in the uk in 2011
Poster idea development:

Firstly, the new content needs a few new symbols. I need to create an image of the world. My thinking for this is a symbol that represents a spherical model of a globe on a stand. I need something that represents clothes. I think that a coathanger would suit this. I also need something that conveys mail. This one is easy. I will create an envelope. They have to be consistant in style of construction with all of the other symbols that have been created through this project.

I am really happy with the outcome of these symbols. They are simple, bold and are consistant in style with the other symbols. I designed them with the same rules. No line is less than 6mm in width. They are simple and could be used as stencils.

I have spent a while trying to work out an aesthetically pleasing composition for the science posters. I want them to work with my small book so that they make a set of information.

I really like the idea of including a small amount of text about the center of sustainable chemical technologies. This text is also given in the first spread of my small handout. I an not happy however with the overall composition. There is too much weight at the bottom and your attention is not on the symbol.

I am happy with the composition of this poster. I think that the bar sits nicely at the bottom and is balanced by the title at the top of the poster. The top and bottom weight means that your eye is drawn to the centre of the poster, where the symbol is. This is exactly what I wanted when designing it. Also, I have numbered all of the posters. These numbers relate to my little book of big facts. The posters and the handout work as a set. However, I do not like how the title has a dash in it. I need to edit the amount of words per line. I am now going to construct all ten final posters ready for print.

I have also reprinted the final small handout. I have edited the content so that it now incorporates the same content as the posters.

Poster Research

I was looking through books in the library for inspiration for another project I am working on and I came across these posters and leaflets. They have inspired me for my own leaflet and poster series.

I have photographed these leaflets because of their interesting format. The long thin length and simple type work really well together. The simple, bold colour scheme and stylised, rounded speech marks are powerful and visually impressive. They work so well as a set. They are designed with consistency  only changing the colour scheme and positioning of text. I want to create a series of posters for my input into the science project that compliment my handout. I think that a handout in this format would be powerful. I am visualising 3 or 4 of our symbols running down the leaflet with the title of one of the four subjects (attitudes to chemicals, bio-plastics etc) that the leaflet is about in simple white type in the center.

I also love these posters by BBH london. If my posters are going to work alongside my book giving the same facts then I am going to have very few design elements to work with. I will have a simple statement and a symbol. They are going to need to be bold and striking posters that make people want to find out more about the centre for sustainable chemical technologies. These posters are designed in a similar way. They use a simple, bold and powerful symbol that dominates the composition. The text is left aligned and a rather small font in comparison to the symbol. However, the symbol is fun and interesting. Generally, the balance of the compositions are extremely strong. A design works well when it looks effortless in layout. This is what I need to achieve in my poster designs. I really like the positioning of the logotype in the top right hand corner. This is an unusual placement, you would normally expect it to be in the bottom right, but it creates a diagonal of information through the composition. I need to carefully consider the composition when experimenting with layout for my poster designs.
